Owens Corning Duration Shingles: A Roofer’s Overview

by ILIR SHYTI | Sep 24, 2026 | Roof Care

Owens Corning Duration shingles are one of the most common architectural shingles we are asked about when a homeowner starts pricing a new roof. They show up in a lot of quotes across Ontario, and many people want to know whether the name on the bundle actually matters or whether all laminated shingles are basically the same. The honest answer is somewhere in between: the product has a few genuinely useful design features, and the installation matters at least as much as the shingle.

This overview explains what sets the Duration line apart, how the family members differ, what we pay attention to when installing them, and how to think about the comparison with other architectural shingles sold in the GTA. Where specific ratings and warranty terms come up, we point you to Owens Corning’s current literature, because those details change and vary between Canada and the United States.

What Makes Owens Corning Duration Shingles Different

Owens Corning Duration shingles are laminated architectural shingles: two layers of asphalt-coated fibreglass mat bonded together, with the lower layer showing through cut-outs in the upper one to create a dimensional look. That construction is shared by every architectural shingle on the market. What Owens Corning built its marketing around is a feature called SureNail Technology.

The SureNail strip, explained plainly

Across the face of each Duration shingle there is a visible band of woven engineered fabric. That band marks the nailing zone and reinforces it. The idea is simple: shingles fail in wind when nails are placed in the wrong spot or when the mat tears around the nail head. A clearly marked, reinforced strip gives installers an obvious target, and the fabric helps the shingle hold the nail. Owens Corning also describes the common bond between the two laminated layers at the nail line, so the nail passes through both layers rather than just one.

From an installer’s point of view, the practical benefit is consistency. On a large roof with a crew moving quickly, a wide, clearly visible nailing target reduces the number of high nails, which are one of the most common causes of shingles lifting and blowing off. It does not make poor workmanship impossible, but it narrows the room for error.

Sealant and the rest of the shingle

Like other architectural shingles, Duration shingles have a factory-applied sealant strip that bonds each course to the one below once the roof warms up in the sun. Many colours include algae-resistant granules, which Owens Corning markets under the StreakGuard name, to slow the black streaking you see on north-facing slopes in the GTA. Confirm which colours carry that feature on the current product sheet, because it is not something to assume.

If you are weighing a full roof replacement with a new architectural shingle, it helps to understand that the shingle is only one part of a system that also includes underlayment, ice and water membrane at the eaves and valleys, starter strip, ridge cap and ventilation.

The Duration Family: Standard, FLEX And STORM

Owens Corning sells several variations under the Duration name. Availability differs by region and supplier, and the lineup has changed over the years, so treat the descriptions below as a general guide and check with a local supplier or roofer what is actually stocked in the GTA this season.

Product What Owens Corning emphasizes Who tends to consider it What to confirm first
Duration (standard) SureNail reinforced nailing zone, broad colour range, algae resistance on many colours Most homeowners replacing a typical architectural or three-tab roof Current colour list for Canada and the warranty terms in force
Duration FLEX Polymer-modified (SBS) asphalt for flexibility; marketed with an impact rating Homes where hail or cold-weather flexibility is a concern Local availability, colour options and the exact impact classification on the data sheet
Duration STORM Added reinforcement for impact resistance; marketed with an impact rating Owners who want an impact-rated shingle without changing appearance much Whether it is stocked locally and whether your insurer recognizes the rating
Duration Designer and special colour lines Distinctive blends from the same basic shingle Owners who want a particular look Lead time and whether the colour is regularly available for future repairs

A word on impact ratings

Both FLEX and STORM are marketed with an impact resistance rating under the UL 2218 test standard. That is a laboratory test of steel balls dropped onto the shingle, and a high rating means the shingle resisted cracking under those conditions. It does not mean the roof cannot be damaged by hail. In parts of the United States, insurers offer discounts for impact-rated roofs; in Ontario that is far less common. If insurance savings are part of your decision, ask your insurer directly before paying extra for them.

Cold-weather handling

SBS-modified shingles like Duration FLEX stay more pliable in cool temperatures, which helps when installing in late autumn and bending shingles into valleys and over hips. That said, every asphalt shingle still needs warmth to fully activate its seal strip, so a roof installed in November may not seal completely until spring. A careful crew hand-seals where the manufacturer’s cold-weather instructions call for it.

How Owens Corning Duration Shingles Look On An Ontario Home

Appearance is usually what homeowners care about first, and it is where photographs mislead most. Owens Corning uses its TruDefinition colour platform on Duration, which layers granule colours for more contrast and depth. In person, that contrast is what makes a roof look dimensional from the street rather than flat.

Some practical advice on choosing a colour:

  • Look at full-size samples outside. A small swatch under store lighting looks nothing like a whole roof in daylight. Ask your roofer for a full shingle or look at finished homes.
  • Consider your brick and siding. Warm red brick, cool grey stone and bright white siding each pair differently. Most houses in older GTA neighbourhoods look best with a colour that picks up one tone from the masonry.
  • Think about heat and attic temperature. Darker shingles absorb more heat. Good attic ventilation matters more than colour, but it is worth considering on a poorly ventilated attic.
  • Think about future repairs. A long-running standard colour is easier to match years later than a limited or discontinued blend.

Because Owens Corning Duration shingles are made in several plants and colours shift slightly between production runs, a good crew orders all shingles for one roof at once and blends bundles as they install, pulling from several bundles at a time. That avoids visible patches of slightly different shade.

Installation Details That Matter More Than The Brand

We tell clients plainly: Owens Corning Duration shingles, like any premium shingle, will only perform as well as they are installed. A premium shingle installed carelessly will underperform a mid-range shingle installed well. Most shingle failures we see on roofs that are only a few years old come from installation, not manufacturing. These are the points we watch on every Duration job.

Detail Common shortcut What should happen What goes wrong if skipped
Nail placement High or angled nails from a rushed crew Nails flush inside the marked nailing zone Shingles lift or blow off in wind
Starter course Cut three-tab pieces, or none on the rakes Matching starter with sealant at eaves and rakes First course and rake edges peel up
Ridge cap Cut field shingles bent over the ridge Matching hip and ridge cap product Cracked caps and leaks along the ridge
Flashing Old flashing reused and caulked Step, counter and apron flashing assessed and replaced Leaks at walls, chimneys and skylights
Bundle blending Installing one bundle at a time Pulling from several bundles as the crew works Visible patches of slightly different shade

Nailing

Nails go within the marked nailing zone, driven flush, not over-driven and not angled. The number of nails per shingle is set by the manufacturer’s instructions and increases on steep slopes and in some high-wind situations. Pneumatic nailers need their pressure set correctly: over-driven nails cut through the mat, under-driven nails hold the shingle above up so it cannot seal.

Starter strip and ridge cap

Owens Corning makes matching starter shingles and hip and ridge cap products. Using proper starter with a sealant line along the eaves and rakes is what keeps the first course from lifting in wind. Cutting three-tab shingles as a substitute, or skipping starter on the rakes, is a common shortcut. Matching ridge cap shingles are also designed to bend over the ridge without cracking, where cut pieces of field shingle can crack in cold weather.

Underlayment, eaves and valleys

Self-adhered ice and water membrane belongs at the eaves, in valleys and around chimneys, skylights and plumbing stacks, with synthetic underlayment over the rest of the deck. Local requirements and the manufacturer’s instructions both apply, so confirm current requirements with your municipality. If you have a low slope section on the house, it needs its own treatment.

Flashing and penetrations

New shingles should never be laid against old, rusted or caulked flashing. Chimney counter-flashing, step flashing at walls and flashing around skylights should be assessed and replaced as needed. This is where most leaks on newer roofs actually come from.

Ventilation

Manufacturers generally require adequate attic ventilation for their warranty to apply in full. A balanced system of soffit intake and ridge or roof vent exhaust keeps the deck drier in winter and cooler in summer. We review attic ventilation on every replacement quote.

How Duration Compares With Other Architectural Shingles In Ontario

In the GTA, the main architectural shingle lines you will see quoted come from Owens Corning, GAF, IKO, CertainTeed and BP. All are laminated fibreglass shingles, and each manufacturer has its own approach to the nailing zone, colour blends and warranty programs. Rather than rank them, here is how we suggest comparing them fairly.

Comparison point What to look at Why it matters Where to find the answer
Nailing zone design Width, visibility and reinforcement of the nailing area Affects how forgiving the shingle is to fast installation Manufacturer installation instructions
Wind and impact ratings Test standard, rating and required nail count Ratings depend on installing exactly as specified Current product data sheet
Algae resistance Whether your chosen colour includes it and for how long it is covered Streaking is a common complaint on shaded GTA roofs Product sheet and limited warranty document
Warranty structure Basic limited warranty versus enhanced system warranties Enhanced coverage often requires specific accessories and a certified installer Manufacturer’s current warranty literature for Canada
Local supply and colour What is stocked in the GTA and how long colours stay in production Affects lead time and future repair matching Your roofer and local supply yards

In practice, the price difference between comparable architectural shingles from the major brands is usually a small part of the total job. A full replacement on a typical detached GTA home with architectural shingles often falls in the range of about $10,000 to $22,000 or more, but that is only an estimate: roof size, pitch, number of layers to remove, deck repairs, flashing, ventilation and access all move the number far more than the choice between two comparable brands.

Understanding The Warranty Without Overstating It

Owens Corning offers a limited warranty on Duration shingles, and, like other manufacturers, it has enhanced system warranties that can extend coverage when a full set of qualifying components is installed by a contractor in its certified network. The terms, including what is covered, for how long, whether coverage is prorated, and whether it transfers when you sell the house, are set out in Owens Corning’s current warranty documents for Canada. We recommend reading those documents directly rather than relying on a summary in a sales pitch, including this one.

A few points apply to almost every shingle warranty:

  • Manufacturer warranties generally cover manufacturing defects in the product, not installation errors.
  • Installing outside the manufacturer’s instructions, such as below the minimum slope or with too few nails, can affect coverage.
  • Inadequate ventilation is a common reason manufacturers limit coverage.
  • Registration may be required for some coverage; keep your invoice and product details.
  • Workmanship coverage comes from the contractor and is separate; ask what your roofer offers in writing.

Questions To Ask A Roofer Quoting Owens Corning Duration Shingles

When comparing quotes, these questions separate a careful installer from a price-only bid:

  1. Which exact Duration product and colour are you quoting, and is it in stock locally?
  2. Are you using matching starter and ridge cap, or cut field shingles?
  3. How many nails per shingle will you use on each slope of my house?
  4. Where will ice and water membrane go, and what underlayment covers the rest?
  5. Will all flashing be replaced, including chimney counter-flashing and step flashing?
  6. What will you do about attic ventilation, and why?
  7. What is the per-sheet price if deck boards need replacing?
  8. What workmanship warranty do you provide, and is it in writing?

If a roofer cannot answer these clearly, the brand on the bundle will not save the roof. You can read answers to more general questions on our roofing FAQ page.

What is SureNail Technology?

SureNail is the woven fabric strip across the face of Owens Corning Duration shingles that marks and reinforces the nailing zone. It gives installers a clear target and helps the shingle hold the nail. It still depends on the crew placing nails correctly.

Are Owens Corning Duration shingles good for Ontario weather?

Owens Corning Duration shingles are widely installed in Ontario and perform well when installed to the manufacturer’s instructions with proper ice and water membrane, flashing and attic ventilation. Installation quality matters more than small differences between comparable brands.

What is the difference between Duration, Duration FLEX and Duration STORM?

Standard Duration is the core architectural shingle. FLEX uses SBS polymer-modified asphalt for flexibility, and STORM adds reinforcement for impact resistance; both are marketed with impact ratings. Check local availability and the current data sheets.

How long is the warranty on Duration shingles?

Owens Corning provides a limited warranty and enhanced system warranties through certified contractors. Terms vary by country and change over time, so read Owens Corning’s current warranty documents for Canada rather than relying on a summary.

Can Duration shingles be installed in cold weather?

Yes, with care. Seal strips need warmth to bond, so late-season roofs may not fully seal until spring. Crews should follow the manufacturer’s cold-weather instructions, which can include hand-sealing.

Do Owens Corning Duration shingles cost more than other brands?

Owens Corning Duration shingles are usually priced in the same general range as other mainstream architectural shingles. On a full replacement, labour, tear-off, deck repair and flashing make up most of the cost, so the brand choice is a small part of the total.
