An ice dam is a ridge of solid ice at the edge of your roof that stops meltwater from draining. The water backs up behind it, works its way under the shingles, and runs into the attic and down the walls. By the time it shows on a ceiling it has usually been soaking insulation for days. Why Ice Dams Form on Toronto Roofs
Ice dams are a heat problem, not a weather problem. Warm air escapes from the living space into the attic, warms the underside of the roof deck, and melts the snow lying on the upper part of the roof. That meltwater runs down until it reaches the eaves, which sit outside the heated envelope and stay well below freezing, and there it turns back into a solid ridge of ice. The ridge grows, the pool of water trapped behind it gets deeper, and eventually the water sits higher than the shingle overlap and gets underneath. It is why the houses on your street with the biggest icicles are usually the ones with the warmest attics, and why knocking the ice off never stops it coming back.
Recessed lights, bathroom fans venting into the attic instead of through the roof, an unsealed attic hatch, insulation crushed flat over the top plates and soffit vents blocked with insulation are the usual culprits. We look for all of them while we are up there. Removing the ice deals with the emergency; correcting the air leakage and the ventilation is what actually ends the problem.

Ice Dam Prevention That Lasts Beyond One Winter
Every ice dam call we take in January leads to the same conversation in April: what do we do so this does not happen again. The answer is nearly always a combination of three things, and none of them is a heat cable.
First, stop warm air getting into the attic. That means air sealing the ceiling plane, sealing around pot lights and the attic hatch, and making sure bathroom and kitchen fans are ducted right through to the outside rather than dumping humid air into the attic. Second, get the insulation depth back up to current Ontario levels across the whole attic floor, including the awkward strip over the exterior walls where it is usually thin or compressed. Third, balance the ventilation so cold outside air moves continuously from the soffits up to the ridge and carries any remaining heat away before it can melt the snow above. On a roof that is due for replacement anyway, we go further and run a self-adhered ice and water shield membrane from the eaves up well past the interior wall line. Can I remove an ice dam myself?
We strongly advise against it. Hammers, chisels and hatchets crack shingles that are already brittle in the cold, and rock salt or calcium chloride corrodes eavestroughs, stains masonry and kills the planting below. A roof rake can help if you can safely reach the lowest few feet from the ground, but climbing an icy ladder in winter is how people get seriously hurt. Low pressure steam is the only method that takes a dam off without damaging the roof.
Will the ice dam come back after you remove it?
If nothing changes in the attic, yes, and often within the same winter. Removal is emergency treatment rather than a cure. That is why every removal we do includes an attic inspection covering air leakage, insulation depth and soffit to ridge airflow, plus a written recommendation for the permanent fix. Homes where we correct the ventilation and air sealing very rarely call us back for the same problem.
Does home insurance cover ice dam damage?
Most Ontario homeowner policies cover the sudden interior water damage an ice dam causes, such as ruined drywall, flooring and contents, but they generally do not cover the cost of removing the ice or correcting the attic.
