What Poor Ventilation Actually Costs You

In winter, water vapour from cooking, showering, laundry and simply breathing rises into the attic and condenses on the cold sheathing. Ice damming is the visible winter consequence. The problems ventilation prevents are winter problems. Frost, condensation, mould growth and ice damming all appear once the heating season begins and outdoor temperatures fall below the attic dew point. Work completed in September and October is in place before that season starts. Work done in February addresses nothing until the following winter.

Conditions also favour the work now. Attics are dangerously hot in July and August, which limits how long anyone can safely work in them and how well the job gets done. In autumn attic temperatures are comfortable, so the work is more thorough. Any exterior component that needs installing, such as a ridge vent or new soffit venting, requires shingle work, and shingles are still warm enough in early autumn to seal properly after being disturbed.
