Not every siding problem needs the whole house done. Wind lifts a run of panels off a gable end, a ladder or a hailstorm cracks a section of vinyl, a squirrel opens up a soffit corner, or the one elevation that takes all the weather has faded while the other three still look new. Where the wall behind is dry and the profile is still available, we repair or replace that section and blend it in.
What we will not do is put new cladding over a wall we know is wet. If there is staining on the sheathing, soft spots underfoot, or evidence that water has been getting in at a window or a roof to wall junction, that gets fixed first. Those junctions are exactly where roofing and siding meet, and they are the reason so many exterior leaks get blamed on the wrong trade. You get a start date and a realistic finish date in writing before any deposit changes hands.
Should I replace the siding and the roof at the same time?
If both are near the end of their life, doing them together is usually cheaper and always tidier. You pay once for access and site setup, and more importantly the crew can detail the roof to wall junctions, drip edge, kick out flashing and fascia as one continuous system instead of two trades meeting at a line that neither of them owns. Can damaged siding cause structural problems?
It can. Once water gets in behind cladding it has nowhere to dry, so it soaks the sheathing and the framing behind it. Left alone that becomes rotted studs, mould in the wall cavity and eventually damage at the sill plate and rim joist. Cracked panels, gaps at corners and windows, soft spots when you press on the wall and staining inside are all reasons to have it looked at now rather than next season.
