Roof Maintenance Tips to Prepare for the Winter

Jan 24, 2020 | News & Tips

Winter brings its own challenges when it comes to your roof and home. Before the first winter freeze, there are several things you can do to prepare for an emergency roofing problem, including the following.

Have the Gutters Cleaned

Leaves and debris collected in a gutter system will eventually clog up the downspouts. Clogging results in water overflowing the gutters and damaging the roof, siding, trim and foundation. In addition, the increased weight caused by the runoff and wet debris can cause gutters to pull loose and collapse. You may want to consider having gutter guards or screens installed by a roofing company which keeps debris from collecting.

Check for Damage

Check for deteriorated or missing shingles and damaged flashing around skylights, chimneys and vent stacks. This is definitely a task that is better off left to a professional roofing company (sooner rather than later).

Remove Debris from the Roof

Have leaves, pine needles, insects and other debris removed from the roof’s surface. Even small amounts of debris can retain moisture that can cause mold and rot that breaks down roofing material. Pay special attention to areas on the roof that are vulnerable to water damage.

Dealing with Snow

Excessive amounts of snow and ice accumulation puts your roof at risk of collapse. A warm attic can end up melting the snow close to the middle of the roof. This snow then flows down, refreezing near the eaves. When this happens, it ends up expanding, causing cracks in the roofing, damaging shingles and gutters. Call a professional roofing company to find out how to avoid these problems.

Check the Ventilation and Insulation in the Attic

If there isn’t enough airflow in the attic, you could end up with roof leaks and increased energy bills. Without vents (properly functioning) near the ridges, gables, soffits, etc., of the roof, hot air ends up causing condensation, leading to moisture damage, rot or mold in the roof’s supports. In addition, the heat can cause ice dams if you live at a high elevation, leading to leaking when snow builds up on the roof.

Be Prepared – planning ahead and being prepared for a potential emergency roofing problem will protect you and your home – your most important investment. The best way to do this is to hire a professional roofing company.
