5 Tips to Prepare Your Roof for Spring

Feb 28, 2020 | News & Tips

Preparing your roof for spring will help you avoid roof damage and costly repairs. The following 5 tips will help get your home’s roof ready for spring.

1. Check the Roof

Check the roof for debris, mold and moss, look for signs of leaking and check for surface damage (shingles, etc.). Inspect any downspouts, vents, edges, caulking, membrane, etc. Pay really close attention to the areas around pipes and chimneys, anywhere that something passes through the roof. It’s highly recommended that you hire a professional to clean the roof and have necessary repairs completed right away. The roof should be cleaned (and inspected) twice a year, preferably during the spring and autumn months.

2. Check the Gutters

Check your gutters regularly. Gutter systems have been designed to keep water away from your home and foundation. If the gutters are clogged, they can’t work effectively. This can lead to wood rot, mold, moss and cracks in the foundation. If you notice that the gutters are clogged, clean them out (or hire a professional to do it). How often the gutters should be cleaned depends on the home’s location. If there are a lot of trees surrounding your home, they may need to be cleaned 3 or more times a year.

3. Check for Water Damage Inside

Check for water damage on the interior ceiling and walls that may be emanating from the roof. In addition, inspect the door and window frames for water stains. Unusual stains should be taken seriously.

4. Schedule a Roof Inspection

It’s not easy for a homeowner to tell when a roof needs a repair, which is why it’s recommended that they hire a reputable roofing contractor. During the roof inspection, the roofing professional will be able to recognize problem areas and recommend strategies for resolving them.

5. Trim the Trees

Unkempt trees can cause costly damage to roofs. Make sure there aren’t any large branches/limbs hanging over the roof that could break off during a storm, causing serious roof damage.Preparing your roof for spring will provide you with the chance to catch any leaks or damage before they get worse, saving you a lot aggravation and money in repairs.
